The Unofficial Shopify Podcast #643, with Ben Sehl of Shopify

Shopify Canvas Everything you want to know

On October 1, Shopify launched a new theme editor built around Sidekick. Ben Sehl leads Online Store at Shopify and his team rebuilt the editor from scratch. I asked him what it is, what it can't do yet, and who should use it today.

The short answer

Shopify Canvas is a new theme editor, launched October 1, 2026, that lays out every page of your store on one artboard. You edit by clicking text and typing, or by telling Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent, what to change. It runs beside the classic theme editor for now. Ben Sehl says it will be the only theme editor in time, with no date set.

  • It's optionalCanvas edits a duplicate of your theme. The original stays in the classic editor, and you can go back.
  • It's a research previewNo third-party Theme Store themes, apps, or Markets at launch. Ben says themes and apps are coming.
  • Code is the source of truthSidekick writes Liquid directly. It autosaves, keeps a version history, and runs theme check before you publish.
  • Who it's for todayNew stores, full redesigns, tinkerers, and anyone already building themes with an AI coding agent.

what-is-canvas

What is Shopify Canvas?

Canvas is a visual workspace for designing a Shopify store with Sidekick. Shopify calls it "a new design surface where merchants build with Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent." Every page of your store sits side by side on one infinite canvas. You pan across it, zoom in, and change anything in place.

It launched October 1, 2026 as what Ben calls a research preview, something Shopify rarely does. The team shipped early on purpose. Ben's reason comes from his own past: Shopify's Dawn theme shipped a month after he finished an 18-month headless build, and he wished he had known sooner. With Canvas, he wants merchants planning next year to see it now.

Why Shopify rebuilt the editor instead of adding AI to it

The old theme editor worked for 15 years. Ben's reason for replacing it starts with his own habits. Once AI models got good, he says, he had "more fun in a CLI than I did in our editor." Most merchants will never open a terminal, though.

If you have to type cd into a [terminal], we can probably do better.

Ben Sehl, Director of Product, Online Store, Shopify

In Ben's words, "we literally rebuilt everything from scratch." The artboard view comes from Ben's early career as a designer, when his team printed every page of a site and pinned them to a cork board to see the whole thing at once. Canvas puts that view in the admin. When you change a header, you can see every page the change touches.

Underneath, Canvas renders Liquid in the browser with a JavaScript implementation, instead of round-tripping every edit to Shopify's servers. That lets it attach source maps to the page: click any piece of text and Canvas knows whether it lives in a setting, a locales file, a snippet, or a hard-coded tag, and writes the edit there. Ben says the same architecture opens the door to offline editing later.

Sidekick made more than 25 million edits to themes in the first half of 2026, per Shopify's launch post.

canvas-vs-theme-editor

Shopify Canvas vs. the theme editor

The classic theme editor is a responsive preview with a settings sidebar, backed by JSON templates. Canvas is an artboard of every page, backed by Liquid code that Sidekick writes. You can still click and type for small edits. Big changes go to Sidekick.

Feature Theme editor Canvas
What you see One page at a time in a browser preview Every page on one artboard, pan and zoom
How you edit Settings in a sidebar panel Click or double-click text and type, or ask Sidekick
Source of truth JSON templates, sections, and settings The theme's code. Sidekick may turn JSON templates into Liquid templates
Rendering Each change round-trips to Shopify's servers Liquid renders in the browser, so edits show in real time
Saving Manual save Autosave, with a version history behind a clock icon
Before publish Settings changes, no code to check Theme check runs. Errors block publish, and a "fix with Sidekick" button sends them back to the agent
Theme Store themes, apps, Markets Supported Not yet

Rows on rendering, saving, and theme check come from Ben on the episode. Support and update rows come from Shopify's changelog and help center.

Sidekick or direct edits?

Ben's rule: use Sidekick when you know the goal but not the steps, and edit directly when you already know what you want. Asking Sidekick to rename a headline from "Latest in" to "New arrivals" and waiting 20 seconds for it is, in his words, "extremely annoying." Shopify calls the click-and-type path imperative edits. Those save straight into the code without going through Sidekick at all.

how-to-use-canvas

How do you use Shopify Canvas?

Open Online Store, then Themes, in your Shopify admin on a desktop computer. Create a new theme in Canvas, or duplicate a Shopify-built or custom theme into Canvas. Then zoom into any page, click to edit, or tell Sidekick what you want.

  1. Open Themes. In the admin, go to Online Store, then Themes. Ben says to click the new button, or use the three-dot menu on a theme and choose to try Canvas. Canvas runs on desktop only.
  2. Start fresh or duplicate. Build a new theme from a description of your brand, or duplicate an existing Shopify or custom theme. Canvas edits the copy. Your original stays in the classic editor.
  3. Look at the whole store. Pan across the artboard. Every template sits side by side, so you can see when a change is local and when it's global.
  4. Edit. Double-click text and type for small changes. For anything bigger, select an element and tell Sidekick the outcome you want.
  5. Walk away if you want. Sidekick keeps working after you close the laptop. Every change autosaves. Click the clock icon to scroll back and restore any checkpoint.
  6. Publish. Theme check runs first. If Sidekick broke something, publish is blocked until you fix it, and "fix with Sidekick" hands it the errors.

Staff accounts need the Edit code permission for themes to open Canvas, and the plan must include theme customization, per Shopify's requirements page.

is-canvas-replacing-the-theme-editor

Is Canvas replacing the theme editor?

Not yet. Canvas is optional, and you can switch back to the classic editor. Ben says Canvas will become the default and, in time, the only theme editor. There won't be any forced changes before Q1 2027. Shopify's launch post says "Canvas is not replacing the existing editor yet."

Our intention is to make this the default theme editor. Like, this will be the only theme editor in time. But there's a road for us to get there, right?

Ben Sehl

Ben's goal is to get there without forcing anyone: "If we do our jobs right, we're not gonna be forcing anybody to do that. They're all gonna just wanna switch over." He also explained why Canvas didn't simply replace the old editor on day one. Most merchants make half their annual revenue in the next three months, and Shopify won't change their tools in the middle of BFCM.

On the rollout: Canvas works on all plans. On October 8, Ben estimated it had reached about 40 percent of stores, with everyone else following in the coming days.

canvas-limitations

What can't Canvas do yet?

At launch, Canvas doesn't support Theme Store themes from third-party developers, app blocks or app embeds, Markets customization, or theme translations. Themes edited in Canvas stop receiving theme updates, and you can't download their files. Ben Sehl says third-party themes and apps are coming.

Works now

  • Shopify-built and custom themes, duplicated into Canvas
  • New themes built from a description of your brand
  • Click-to-edit text and Sidekick edits, in real time
  • Autosave and version history
  • Theme check before publish
  • GitHub sync
  • All plans that include theme customization

Not yet

  • Third-party Theme Store themes
  • App blocks and app embeds
  • Markets customization; rollouts can swap in a Canvas theme but can't edit it
  • Translations inside Canvas (use Translate & Adapt)
  • Theme updates and theme file downloads
  • Adding blocks by hand: ask Sidekick instead
  • Mobile: desktop only

Ben addressed theme developers directly. Canvas does run third-party themes, but there were rendering issues that Shopify caused, and he didn't want theme developers fielding support tickets for them.

I'm so sorry. I really wanted to get them earlier. I hated that we launched without them.

Ben Sehl, on third-party themes and apps

He said Shopify had app support working in prototypes in September, with a few UX problems left to solve. His reason for not rushing them: "You only do this type of a reset like once every 15 years," so the team won't carry old decisions into the new editor just to ship faster.

who-should-use-canvas

Who should use Canvas now, and who should wait?

Use Canvas now if you're starting a store, planning a full redesign, or already building themes with an AI coding agent. Wait if your store depends on a Theme Store theme, app blocks, or Markets, or if you don't want everyone on your team able to change your site's code.

Use it now

  • You're starting a store from scratch
  • You want to totally redesign your site
  • You like to tinker and try things
  • You already use Claude Code or a similar agent and rarely open the theme editor

Wait

  • Your live theme is a third-party Theme Store theme
  • You rely on app blocks, app embeds, or Markets
  • You need approvals before anyone changes code
  • You're in the middle of peak season

Ben's own clothing brand, Kotn, is in the second group. Kotn hired an agency, Commerce-UI, for a full rebuild and did not put it on Canvas. A mid-eight-figure brand needs the build rock solid, and Ben doesn't want every intern able to edit code across the site.

Who's it not for? People who don't want everybody on the team to go and edit the code on their site.

Ben Sehl

He expects to close that gap with tools developers already use: pull requests, linters, and design-system rules that allow only your brand's exact shade of purple. He named extensible theme check rules and approval workflows as things he wants, with no timeline.

My take

I played with Canvas early and I like it. The artboard alone is worth opening, because it's the first time the admin shows you your whole store at once. I stopped using the theme editor this year and do everything from the command line, and Canvas gets a merchant most of that workflow without the terminal.

For a store doing real volume, I'd follow Ben's own lead: duplicate your theme into Canvas and explore, but don't move your live theme onto it before BFCM is over.

themes-and-github

What happens to your theme, JSON templates, and GitHub?

Canvas makes a duplicate of your theme, so the original stays safe. Sidekick may replace JSON templates with Liquid templates, which the classic editor can't show. GitHub sync still works, and Canvas keeps its own git-based version history with autosave.

  • The old editor reads JSON. Its sidebar is "entirely powered by JSON," Ben says. Once a template is Liquid, the classic editor reports that it has no sections.
  • Sidekick prefers Liquid. Ben: Sidekick "just does a lot better at writing Liquid than it does writing JSON." That's why Canvas works on a copy.
  • You can switch editors. Change the URL to move between them, though a Liquid-template theme isn't useful in the old one.
  • GitHub is a syncing mechanism. Ben wants to rebuild that workflow too, and sees pull requests and enforced checks as key to making Canvas work for larger merchants.
  • Nothing breaks. Shopify's standard is zero breaking changes. Snowdevil, store number one, still runs code from 23 years ago.

A good developer experience is a good agent experience.

Ben Sehl, on why Sidekick uses the Shopify CLI and theme check under the hood
theme-settings

What happens to theme settings?

Now everybody knows code. It's called English.

Ben Sehl

Settings stay, but fewer of them. Ben wants blocks to work like components in Figma: two or three variants, such as a primary and an outline button, locked to your brand. Anything beyond that, you ask Sidekick for.

I told Ben I always thought I wanted more theme settings, right up until I used Horizon. "We hit peak theme settings." He agreed. Some Horizon blocks have 30 settings, and Shopify's free Horizon-era themes are, in his words, "13 different versions of the same theme." Settings also box you in. Two buttons side by side means another setting or a group block. In HTML, it's a div.

Ben's guidance for text is just as direct: every piece of text should live in a locales file or come from a resource like a product title. Canvas can edit it where it lives either way, and it's all translatable.

agencies-and-developers

What does Canvas mean for Shopify agencies and developers?

Ben thinks agencies are worth more now, not less. AI takes tasks, not jobs. The value an agency brings is judgment and taste, and an expert using agents moves far faster than a beginner using the same tools.

The value was never in the code. It was never writing the code.

Ben Sehl

At DotDev this summer, Ben asked a room of Shopify partners how many use AI models for 100 percent of their code. Most raised a hand. His point: typing was never what clients paid for. He hired Commerce-UI to rebuild Kotn and move it off headless onto native Shopify, and it took about four months.

Everybody's at a one, and these people are at 100.

Ben Sehl, on experienced builders working with agents

He also cited Jevons paradox: when ATMs arrived, the number of bank tellers went up, not down. Make software cheaper to build and demand for builders rises. I see it the same way. A power drill didn't take a carpenter's job. It made the carpenter faster.

canvas-prompts

What should you try first in Canvas?

Type "redesign my store" and let Sidekick interview you. Ben's colleague Tom uses that vague prompt on purpose. You don't have to ship the result. Ten minutes in, you can throw it away and start another.

These are the prompts Ben described on the episode, in order. Copy one into Sidekick.

  1. Redesign my storeStart here. It asks what you want, then builds.
  2. Build me a page that shows me every component in my entire siteBen's design-system review page, like Storybook for your theme.
  3. Make a 12-column grid overlay that shows the grid system my site usesHe got a toggle that overlays the grid on every page.
  4. Make everything aligned to the gridFor the things that are one pixel off.
  5. Now build the rest of the pagePerfect one hero, then let Sidekick match the pattern.
  6. Do that for all the other templates we haven't worked onBen got a 404 page and a gift card page he'd never have designed himself.
  7. Make the fonts a little more modernSidekick remembered the custom fonts he'd approved the week before. Then ask it to use your approved colors too.

My challenge to you: give it the task you think it can't do. If you tried a tool like this two years ago and it fell flat, this is a different world.

Shopify Canvas FAQ

When did Shopify launch Canvas?

October 1, 2026, as a research preview rolling out to stores over the following days.

Is Shopify Canvas free?

Canvas is part of the Shopify admin on all plans. Your plan must include theme customization. If you move to a plan without it, you can view Canvas-edited themes but can't edit or publish them.

Where do I find Canvas in my admin?

Go to Online Store, then Themes. Create a new theme in Canvas, or duplicate a Shopify-built or custom theme into Canvas. It's desktop only.

Can I go back to the old theme editor?

Yes. Canvas is optional, and it edits a duplicate. Your original theme stays in the classic editor.

Does Canvas work with my Theme Store theme?

Not at launch. Third-party Theme Store themes aren't supported yet. Ben Sehl says they're coming, after Shopify fixes rendering issues on its side.

Does Canvas support Shopify apps?

Not yet. You can't add or configure app blocks or app embeds in Canvas. Ben says app support is close.

Will my Canvas theme get theme updates?

No. Themes edited in Canvas don't receive theme updates, and you can't download their theme files.

Does Canvas save automatically?

Yes. Canvas autosaves every change and keeps a version history. Click the clock icon to restore an earlier checkpoint. Nothing goes live until you publish.

Does Canvas work with GitHub?

Yes, GitHub sync still works. Canvas also keeps its own git-based history under the hood.

What is Sidekick?

Sidekick is Shopify's AI agent. In Canvas it works directly on your theme files, asks questions, remembers your design decisions, screenshots its work, and validates its code with theme check.

Who built Canvas?

Shopify's Online Store team, led by Ben Sehl, Director of Product for Online Store.
