We Measured the AI Traffic Wave: Tiny but Growing Fast

94 million sessions, $274M in revenue, 10 Shopify stores, 24 months of data. AI assistants drive 0.06% of traffic. Here's where the money actually comes from.
We Measured the AI Traffic Wave: Tiny but Growing Fast

We pulled 24 months of raw analytics from 10 of our retainer clients' Shopify stores: 94 million sessions, 2.2 million orders, $274 million in revenue, from July 2024 through June 2026. Established brands doing seven and eight figures a year.

Here's what the AI traffic wave actually looks like: 0.06% of sessions.

Six hundredths of a percent. ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude combined sent fewer visits in two years than a single decent email campaign. AI-referred revenue across all ten stores and both years: $137,000. Out of $274 million. That's 0.05%.

If you've been losing sleep over your AI strategy while your welcome flow sits half-built, I have good news about where your next dollar should go.

Methodology

This is real store data, with real limitations. Attribution is Shopify's last non-direct click, not GA4, not a multi-touch model. There's no ad spend data, because Shopify doesn't have any, so nothing here is a ROAS claim. And AI referral tracking undercounts by nature: when ChatGPT recommends a brand and the shopper Googles it later, that visit shows up as search or direct.

Store names stay anonymous. The point isn't who, it's what the aggregate says.

The AI numbers

Three things are true at once:

1. AI traffic is tiny.

0.06% of sessions, 0.05% of revenue. It is a rounding error on every store in the sample, including the ones ranking well in AI answers.

2. AI traffic is growing fast.

Sessions from AI assistants grew 6x year over year. ChatGPT referrals alone went from 59 sessions a month in August 2024 to over 5,400 a month in June 2026. That's a 93x climb in under two years. ChatGPT is 82% of all AI referrals; everything else splits the scraps.

3. AI visitors are good visitors.

They convert 11% above site average (2.66% vs 2.38%). Someone who asked a chatbot "what's the best [product] for [situation]" and clicked through is already pre-sold. Small pipe, good water.

The right read: AI referral traffic in 2026 is where mobile commerce was around 2010. Real, growing, and nowhere near worth reorganizing your business around. Yet.

Shop is the real star

While everyone watches ChatGPT, the Shop app quietly became a real revenue channel in this dataset.

  • $4.8 million in Shop app revenue, 1.75% of total. That's 35x everything AI-related combined.
  • It doubled year over year. Up 99%.
  • Its average order is smaller: $76 vs $122 portfolio-wide. Shop behaves like a mobile impulse channel, not a considered-purchase channel.

You don't need a strategy deck for this one. Turn on the Shop sales channel, enable Shop Pay, keep your reviews synced, and let Shopify's own distribution work for you. It's the cheapest incremental channel in this entire dataset.

Meanwhile, the boring channels pay the bills

The full channel mix across $274 million:

  • Direct: 37% of sessions, 30% of revenue. Brand strength is still the biggest channel.
  • Email: 15.9% of revenue. That's 318x what AI drives. Read that again before your next strategy meeting.
  • Google: 17.6% of sessions, 13.8% of revenue. Search isn't dead, it's just no longer growing.
  • Facebook: 11.3% of sessions, 1.8% of revenue. The biggest traffic-to-revenue gap in the dataset. Last-click undersells prospecting, sure, but a 6-to-1 gap is a 6-to-1 gap.
  • SMS: 4.4% of sessions, 3.3% of revenue. Quietly efficient.
